Played my first game of Ascension yesterday with @TheDukester and was wondering if there was some extra program that people use to chat since that is one feature Ascension is lacking.

Not that I know of, I just use forums like this one or whatever social networks both players are members of.

There's Messages, of course. It's built right in to those devices we're all using, and it's free.

But, yeah, seriously — games without chat are starting to seem pretty 1994. And I'm not even a huge chat guy. I just like to know it's there.

Also, at some point, Apple needs to open up GameCenter to a basic chat function.

It's crazy that Ascension doesn't have built-in chat, but it's one of Playdek's weird blind spots, I guess. Summoner Wars doesn't either.

I'm wondering if perhaps it's intentional, as sometimes chat can ruin the experience. My days playing poker online convinced me silence can be golden.

Although presumably, people you friend on Game Center are presumably people you trust not to spew belligerent, misspelled fragments at you. So, perhaps it is an oversight.

Sticking to GameCenter friends is the key to a successful chat experience.

Carcassonne is my living proof of this. More than 300 completed games and not one rude, vulgar, or disturbing chat remark. The closest I've come is having a guy say I was getting "lucky" ... and we all know what nonsense **that** is. One does not need luck when one is awesome.

There are always ways to work around it. I had to let TheDukester know that I didn't have Storm of Souls yet for Ascension by chatting within our Carcassonne game. For the most part though, I enjoy the silence for playing random people.
