WW2 or WW1 dogfighting game?

jon_a_rossjon_a_ross Posts: 746Member
December 2012 in Games Discussion
Sitting around reading 'Dogfight: The greatest air duels of world war II' edited by Tony Holmes and finding myself longing for an iOS game to play in the genre.

Can anyone suggest a good one? I am on the fence between wanting a game with realistic physics and wanting a game with excellent gameplay. Crimson Skies, the tabletop game, had excellent gameplay but was about as realistic as battletech. Secret Weapon of the Luftwaffe (pc) had good physics but gameplay not quite as much...

Thanks, eh?

Saw that this game was suggested earlier in the threads, but was curious about what other people play.

Wings of War is being developed for iOS, but I haven't even heard an estimated street date. Sometime in 2013, presumably.

Can't go wrong with Sky Gamblers. Those are excellent games. Storms Raiders is WWII and Rise of Glory is WWI.

Well fair enough. I shall try out Sky Gamblers and look forward to Wings of War. (I think I have that one for PC via Steam)

This is one is getting developed by BDC, so it's in the queue after Eclipse.

I think Cinemaware (the developer behind golden oldies like Defender of the Crown and It Came From the Desert) might be coming up with Wings: Director's Cut at some point soon...the original Wings was awesome on the Amiga back in the day! http://www.cinemaware.com/games/wings-dc/

Wings was one I didn't have. The other two I remember being some of the first games I played on our family's first computer. There may have been some aggressive text games first... but Defender of the Crown was the first graphical game I played for sure.
Out of respect for that alone I would keep my eye out.

Not to spill sports gaming all over your flight games, but Cinemaware was also responsible for TV Sports Football. It one-uped Madden with announcers and a real football atmosphere.

So I caved and downloaded Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders and its brilliant. It's on the right side of arcadey too, you have great control of your plane with pitch yaw etc but you still have infinite bullets.
If you have more than a passing interest in the era and its aircraft dive it, the multiplayer dogfights are brilliant too.

That is the one I didn't pick up in the end. Grabbed Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory and Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy and am having fun with them. Christmas shall likely see me picking up Storm Raiders. I am finding them a little more arcade then my own personal tastes run, but given the limited control space I completely understand why it isn't more flight sim.
